About
Dombeya
Game
Reserve

Located in the scenic, rolling hills of Eswatini’s middleveld, Dombeya is a beautiful and peaceful safari destination and a gateway to nature.

Our conservation model ensures both ecological integrity and long-term sustainability. Monthly levies from carefully controlled homesites provide consistent funding for conservation management: this is foundational.  With only 1 home site per 19 hectares, this leaves over 95% of the Reserve for pure biodiversity conservation.

When we established Dombeya in 2014, the land was under great threat.  Patchy, remaining wildlife was being poached, and large trees were being cut for firewood. Our ecological restoration has been a great success, and we continue to dedicate significant efforts toward maintaining and improving biological diversity, contributing to the national network of Protected Areas.

Our Conservation Model

With diverse wildlife and ecology, Dombeya is a wonderful place to call home. Each of the 14 home sites has a magnificent view of the bush, and all sites are private, carefully controlled, and have nature all around.

All home sites sold quickly after our establishment, but occasionally, a site becomes available for re-sale; please contact us if you would like additional details.

The Reserve includes many scenic walking trails (yellow), gravel game drive roads (white), as well as wildlife watering holes.

Over 2014/2015, we re-introduced many species of wildlife, all purchased from other Game Reserves in Eswatini.

As a fully fenced Game Reserve, we monitor our carrying capacities for different species and manage wildlife populations according to best practices.

Wildlife management is dependent on many variables, including vegetation trends, rainfall patterns, weather/climate and fire cycles, all of which influence the movement and condition of wildlife.

Birdlife

Weaver_Village 4_2023.JPG

We have excellent birding in Dombeya, and our bird list is over 220 species, and counting.  With open savannahs, riverine forests, seasonal pans, year-round dams, and thickets of indigenous forest and bush, our bird habitat is diverse.

We also notice shifting distributions of some species, alongside regional expansion of alien and invasive plants.

Keep your eyes open for village weavers, left, who make nests in the trees by the waters' edges and who love to drink from flowering aloes!
